Minority Youth and Family Services of Connecticut
Description:
To improve and enrich the lives of sexual minority people (lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgendered youth, adults and families) through support,
education, and advocacy within each of the systems (family of origin and
choice; education; mental, physical and spiritual health; social service
and community services) necessary to their development as full and
productive members of society. Fall/Spring 2003-2004 opportunities Facilitate group sessions (1) LGBT Youth Mentoring Program. This program includes monthly joint and separate sessions with mentors and mentorees. Interns will also participate in planning meetings, mentor training, one-on-one feedback and interviews with potential mentors and mentorees. (2) Developing and facilitating support group for LGBT foster parents and a group of foster children growing up in LGBT homes. The groups will be co-led with a DCF Social Worker. Curriculum development as well as responsibilities for elements of both group sessions. Community Organizing (1) activists and organizers will be working with the community, individual legislators and others on a bill designed to add gender identity and expression as well as disabilities to current Hate Crimes Statues. This grassroots effort will include the development of community listening and educational forums; legislator education, learning to and testifying at hearings and other policy meetings. There are a variety of opportunities for students including: group work with children of LBGT parents; high school youth; organizing activities including Children From the Shadows leadership development activities; organizing, policy and administration and opportunities to develop special projects For more information: www.OurTrueColors.org
