5 Hour Volunteer Experience

Upon entering the major, sophomores and juniors are required to put a total of 70 hours a semester, --five hours per week-- into a field experience in an agency setting which provides service to individuals, groups, or communities.

 This volunteer experience is done in conjunction with required social work courses.  It provides opportunities for students to demonstrate maturity and ability to perform adequately in agency situations, even when faced with the disappointment that arise in trying to help others.

Objectives include:

1.   To test their career interests in the field;

2.   To become familiar with a social welfare agency;

3.   Exposure & interaction to the different clients that social work professionals serve;

4.   Develop professional attitudes about work;

5.  Opportunities to integrate classroom learning with the practice reality.

Requirements

Students

1.        Be enrolled in SW226, SW227, SW360,SW361, and or SW368.

Supervisor

1.        A BSW or MSW degree recommended but not required;

2.       Be located on-site;

3.       Develop appropriate tasks & responsibilities that involve participation, not merely observation, that afford

          both educational & experiential value;

4.       Complete with student volunteer the end-of-the- semester evaluation form.

Agency

1. Demonstrate commitment to education and training of future social work professionals.
